May 29, 2026  — Two new studies – both carried out by National Alliance for Public Charter Schools staff – show the impact charter schools have on individual students and whole communities.
The Journal of School Choice published research examining what happens to student outcomes when and where charter schools open. By examining 10 years of data from more than 11,000 school districts across the United States, the study found that charter school entry was associated with meaningful gains in student achievement, especially in reading. What’s more, districts with larger charter school enrollment tended to see the greatest academic improvement over time.

Another new study, English Language Learners in Charter Schools: A New National Look at Performance and Practice, also from the Journal of School Choice – examines how English language learner (ELL) students perform in charter schools and identifies a set of practices common to schools where they perform best. During the years analyzed, ELL students in charter schools outperformed their peers in both reading and math, with particularly large advantages for students in several states.
