Statement from the Florida Charter School Alliance on State of the State Address by Governor DeSantis

Tallahassee, FL – March 5, 2019 – At the start of the 2019 Legislative session today – March 5, 2019 – Governor Ron DeSantis delivered his first State of the State address.  Following is a statement on the address from Lynn Norman-Teck, Executive Director of the Florida Charter School Alliance:

We are inspired by Governor Ron DeSantis’ continued commitment to students, and his plans to strengthen Florida’s system of public education.

“We are a big, diverse state and one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to education,” said DeSantis in his address this morning, and we couldn’t agree more.  For 20 years, Florida lawmakers have fearlessly implemented education reforms that have lead to impressive student outcomes and the expanded availability of quality education options to better serve a variety of learners.  We commend Governor DeSantis’ bold commitment to build on those successes.

We look forward to working with Governor DeSantis and Florida legislators to ensure our state continues to be a leader in quality education programs while addressing, and meeting, the needs and talents of all students.

About the Florida Charter School Alliance:

Formed in 2010 by a group of educators, community leaders, and philanthropists, the Florida Charter School Alliance is a non-profit member-driven organization whose mission is to improve student achievement, and promote parental choice by advocating for and collaborating with high-quality public charter schools.  Our members run the gamut of charter school programs ranging from single campus independent schools to networks with multiple campuses, ESE to credit recovery programs, classical curriculum to college preparatory schools in high need areas. Yet all our member schools have a common thread – a steadfast commitment to raising the bar on public education and providing a quality education option to the children and communities they serve.  Today, close to 300,000 students are enrolled (with over 100,000 students on wait lists) one of the 650 public charter schools in Florida.
