New Research: Charter Schools Improve Student Outcomes

June 2023 — The 2023 Stanford’s Center for Research on Educational Outcomes (CREDO) analysis reveals that public charter schools are making a positive difference in students achievement.

According to the latest CREDO study, “All types of public school students are faring today – and (in no surprise to the families who choose them) charter schools are coming out on top.”  In the study, Florida ranks among 7 states across the nation where charter school students made better reading gains than non-charter school students.

“The more than 700 #charterschools in the Florida continually work to improve student achievement and have made great progress among minority students and underserved communities. This is evident in the academic results that are measured by state assessments and national reports like this CREDO study.. There are qualitative results that are worth menitoning. For over 27 years, public charter schools have been providing families a quality educational options regardless of their zipcode or income,” says Lynn Norman-Teck, Executive Director, Florida Charter School Alliance and charter school parent.
The study also looking at results from CMO-operated schools. According to the report, “results show that existing charter schools have improved over time. The proportion of charter schools with superior results is on the rise. The share that lags behind the local traditional public school  alternatives is also shrinking. This means schools and networks use their discretion and autonomy to foster a standing capacity to adapt over time.”
The CREDO study — in 2009, 2013, and the latest version in 2023 — reviewed more than 3.7 million students across 43 states attend charter schools. Using a common methodology across the three studies, results are translated into trends that support insights into the performance of charter school students over the past 15 years.
