Miami Arts Charter School Announces Two Major Grammy Milestones by Alumnus and Faculty

MIAMI, FL — February 8, 2026 — Miami Arts Charter School (MAC) today announced two major. Grammy milestones that underscore the school’s impact on music education and professional artistic achievement.

Joey Calveiro, a Class of 2025 graduate of Miami Arts Charter (MAC) School, won the GRAMMY Award for Best Latin Jazz Album last week for A Tribute to Benny Moré and Nat King Cole, credited to Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Yainer Horta & Joey Calveiro. Calveiro is 18 years old and completed his studies at Miami Arts Charter School — located in the iconic Midtown/Wynwood District in Miami Dade County — making the achievement a recent milestone following his graduation.

A Remarkable Student Journey

Joey Calveiro’s achievement is particularly notable given his entry into jazz. Calveiro began studying jazz for the first time as a ninth-grade student at Miami Arts Charter School, developing through structured coursework, ensemble performance, mentorship, and hands-on experience. Upon his arrival at MAC, Calveiro studied music under Alfredo de la Rosa, the school’s Founder & Chief Education Administrator, who also serves as Artistic Director, before continuing his development through the school’s music faculty.

By the time he graduated in June 2025, Calveiro had progressed from a beginner in jazz to a professional recording artist. His Grammy Award, earned less than a year after leaving MAC, reflects the depth of instruction and opportunity available within the school’s music program.

Award-Winning Faculty in the Classroom

A Venezuelan electric guitarist and member of the band Kerreke, Sanchez is a Latin GRAMMY Award winner for his work on Joropango, a collaboration with violinist Daniela Padrón. His dual role as an internationally active musician and educator exemplifies the school’s emphasis on real-world artistic practice.

A Broader Educational Vision

MAC offers comprehensive arts education alongside innovative academic pathways, including programs in business entrepreneurship, entertainment media, and music and media production. In alignment with this vision, MAC is also preparing to transition its academic program to a classical curriculum model that emphasizes critical thinking, strong literacy, historical perspective, and intellectual discipline—complementing the school’s arts-focused environment.

“These achievements reflect what becomes possible when students learn from working artists and are challenged to grow both creatively and intellectually,” said Alfredo de la Rosa, Founder & Chief Education Administrator of Miami Arts Charter School and the school’s Artistic Director. “We are proud of Joey Calveiro’s journey and Cesar Sanchez’s accomplishments, and we see them as part of a broader commitment to meaningful, rigorous education.”
