Mater Lakes Academy Teacher Named SECME Teacher of the Year in Miami Dade

Miami Dade County, FL – June 2019 – Mater Lakes Academy teacher Ms. Trigoura was named the 2019 National SECME Teacher of the Year in Miami Dade County. Ms. Trigoura started the robotics program at the charter school — inspriring and engaging students in the field of science, robotics, and engineering.  “We are incredibly proud of Ms. Trigoura. She absolutely deserves this award and recognition,” said Mater Lakes Academy Principal Rovirosa. The SECME National Teacher of the Year is a prestigious, national recognition that focuses attention on honoring educators involved in SECME programs for their outstanding dedication and commitment to the SECME mission: To increase the pool of historically underrepresented and under-served students who will be prepared to enter and complete post-secondary studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), thus creating a diverse and globally competitive workforce.

Founded in 1975 as The Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering, SECME is an alliance of K-12 educators, universities and industry/government partners committed to engaging and preparing more minorities and girls for college and careers in STEM. Every year since 1981, SECME has recognized outstanding K-12 educators who demonstrate leadership ability in advancing student development and outcomes in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Mater Lakes Academy is a middle/high public charter school located at 17300 NW 87th Avenue in Miami. The middle and high school both earned an “A” from the state in 2019.  Mater Lakes Academy Charter High School has been recognized as on the top schools in America by U.S. News & World Report for its high academic achievement and graduation rate. In May 2019, more than a dozen seniors graduated from high school having already earned a two-year college degree.
