May 6, 2026 — Statement from the Florida Charter School Alliance in response to the lawsuit filed by the Florida Education Association challenging Florida’s school choice programs
It is disappointing to see the Florida Education Association’s continued efforts to deprive parents of the right to choose the best educational opportunities for their child. These critics of school choice are out of touch with today’s families, students, and educators.
For three decades, Florida legislators and the governors have done a great job of supporting quality K-12 education — giving parents and historically underserved communities quality school choice options while also protecting children’s rights and raising teacher salaries. Today, nearly half a million students statewide choose to attend a charter school, accounting for approximately 14% of the state’s total K–12 public school population.
Florida’s charter schools have been a vital part of the state’s public education system for nearly three decades, offering a broad and dynamic range of educational programs and serving both urban and rural communities. Florida charter schools have also raised student achievement, especially in historically underserved communities — earning an overall “A” grade on the state’s 2024–25 assessment, according to data released by the Florida Department of Education.
Steady enrollment growth and strong academic achievement show the charter school movement’s commitment to student success through targeted data analysis, innovative practices, adaptive teaching strategies, and a relentless focus on supporting all learners. Denying parents access to educational choice and preventing students from accessing a school that best meets their talents and needs is wrong.
