Minneola students taught to embrace college

Both are just 11 years old, but Minneola Elementary Charter School doesn’t think it’s ever too early to start thinking about college.

This mindset is part of a new College Bound Program that Principal Sherry Watts learned about at the National Charter School Conference she attended last summer.

“I came back to the school and said, ‘We are going to instill the mindset for our students that college is an option for every single one of them,’” Watts said.

The charter school’s teachers wrote to colleges and universities across the country and received little gifts in return, including pens, pencils, banners, pennants, posters and T-shirts to decorate their classrooms. Kids are also reminded of their future every day as they walk by a bulletin board filled with pictures of their teachers during their college days, titled “We went to college. So can you.”
