Significant K-12 Education Bill Becomes Law – June 15, 2017

A statement from Lynn Norman-Teck, FCSA Executive Director & charter school parent

June 15, 2017

We thank Governor Scott and lawmakers for listening to families in Florida and heeding their requests for continued support of quality school options and equitable education funding. For two decades, public charter schools have been a vital part of the K-12 public education system in Florida. Yet those schools and the students they served were receiving less than equitable funding.

Today’s decision by Governor Scott to sign HB7069 corrects that injustice. His signature also means that great teachers will receive bonuses, and alternative schools can use concordant scores as a measure of student success. With support from the governor and lawmakers like Senator Negron, Representatives Michael Bileca, Manny Diaz, Jr., Chris Latvala, and House Speak Richard Corcoran, we will continue to raise academic standards in Florida and enhance the availability of quality school choice for families across the state.

A note to FCSA members:  FCSA’s Director of Governmental Affairs, Ralph Arza, attended the bill signing ceremony today, June 15, 2017, in Orlando.  Ralph has been a tireless advocate for your school and the students you serve.  Thank you, Ralph, for fighting for our kids and never giving up on our legislative priorities. We also want to thank the thousands of parents, teachers, students, and school leaders who voiced support for HB 7069 by writing letters, calling the governor, and even making videos.  Your voice was heard and changed the outcome of this year’s legislative session.
