Dear Honorable Superintendent Carvalho,
I want to first congratulate you and your district for being a school choice and charter school-friendly district. Thousands of children and their parents have benefited from the variety of school choice options in Miami Dade County – from magnet programs to charter schools. Your decision to approve high quality applications have allowed charter schools to be among the many public educational options available to families. Many of the charter schools you have authorized are ranked among the best schools in the state and have earned national recognition for raising student achievement and graduation rates, especially among minority students.
Over the years, the Florida Charter School Alliance (FCSA) has worked with your district in a spirit of collaboration. In continuance of that desire, we would like to formally request to meet and discuss how the recent tax referendum — approved by voters on November 6th — will be distributed among all of the public school students and teachers in Miami Dade County. We believe that public charter school students and public charter school teachers should receive an equal and proportionate share of those tax referendum dollars.
On behalf of public charter school teachers, and the more than 68,000 public charter school students in your district – and their parents – we request a meeting to discuss this matter further.
As always, we appreciate and respect the work you do on behalf of all the children in Miami Dade County.
