Florida charter school leaders, parents not on the agenda of NAACP Charter School Hearing

NAACP leaders in the Sunshine State have dismissed charter school experts and
declined efforts from local and national charter school leaders to engage.

Actions at odds with hearing’s claimed mission to better understand the role and efficacy of charter schools.

Orlando, Fla.
– January 25, 2017 – Leaders from the Florida NAACP chapter have declined efforts from the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and the Florida Charter School Alliance to meaningfully engage in Friday’s charter school hearing. This hearing is the third of seven scheduled meetings across the country to discuss the NAACP National Board’s recent resolution calling for a moratorium on charter public schools, which passed in October over the objections of hundreds of  civil rights leaders and thousands of  African American parents who support the charter schools in their communities.

With the mission of these meetings being to better understand the role and efficacy of charter schools in communities, the Florida NAACP’s refusal to consider experts and information offered by charter school experts flies in the face of their stated goals.

Several charter school leaders and modern civil rights activists who were rejected from participating in the hearing will make public comments and will be available to media.
