Minneola students taught to embrace college
MINNEOLA — April 11, 2016 — Caden Moore wants to study engineering in college, while Lindsey Mayor wants to become an aerospace engineer. Both are just 11 years old, but Minneola Elementary Charter School doesn’t think it’s ever too early to start thinking about college.
“I came back to the school and said, ‘We are going to instill the mindset for our students that college is an option for every single one of them,’” Watts said.
The charter school’s teachers wrote to colleges and universities across the country and received little gifts in return, including pens, pencils, banners, pennants, posters and T-shirts to decorate their classrooms. Kids are also reminded of their future every day as they walk by a bulletin board filled with pictures of their teachers during their college days, titled “We went to college. So can you.”
