A Look at the Charter School Landscape in Florida – 2017

Presentation made before the House of Representatives PreK-12 Innovation Subcommittee

On January 25, 2017, Ralph Arza, FCSA Director of Governmental Affairs, gave members of the PreK-12 Innovation Subcommittee an overview of Florida’s public charter schools — including enrollment, achievement data, and history of capital distribution. He explained that all charter schools are public non-profit schools and shared recent polling with the committee members that shows that 87% of Florida residents believe that parents are best qualified to choose the proper educational environment for their child.

Throughout the year, especially before session begins, the FCSA reaches out to House and Senate members to educate them about public charter schools and address any questions they may have.  An estimated 50% of the member this year are new to the Capitol.  Therefore, our outreach this year is more extensive than ever.

After the PreK-12 Innovation Subcommittee meeting, Mr. Arza and our executive director, Lynn Norman-Teck, met with several subcommittee members and Senator Mayfield to discuss the current state of public education in Florida and provide them with facts about charter schools and the students we serve.
